Extensive Guide on Actinic Purpura

A skin condition can make life feel unbearable and cause emotional distress. It can shake one’s confidence and create limitations to embracing your day-to-day.

As we get older, our skin craves more nutrients to combat thinning layers and decreased collagen production. Understanding our skin’s needs helps us to address them in the best way.

A combination of sun damage and aging causes our skin to thin over time. Actinic purpura can happen at any age, but it tends to occur later in life. As we age, our skin gets drier and less elastic. In addition, sun exposure makes us lose collagen and elastin, which helps keep our skin firm and flexible. Collagen and elastin give strength to our skin and connective tissues. They hold everything together.

Without enough collagen and elastin in our skin, our skin loses its flexibility and resilience.

Secret Beauty Club is here to make every phase of beauty feel joyful and manageable.

WHAT IS ACTINIC PURPURA?

Actinca purpura is defined in the academic space as a “common disorder of dermal connective tissue due to damage from chronic or excessive sun exposure.” Other names for it are Bateman disease, solar purpura or Bateman senile purpura. “Purpura” refers to escaped, trapped blood under the skin, and “actinic” means sun.

Actinia Purpura affects the dermal and subcutaneous tissues. It is a chronic, self-limited disease that affects sun-exposed areas of skin such as the face, ears, scalp, neck, arms, legs, trunk, and even the buttocks, genitalia, or perineum.

As your skin starts to age, it becomes thinner and more fragile. The blood vessels under the skin also become delicate and less resilient. So, when you see a bruise, it results from minor trauma — the blood from a broken blood vessel.

Senile purpura or actinca purpura is a benign condition which means that it is not harmful or dangerous. The risk factors are extremely low. The area is not contagious, but over time, it can accumulate over the skin surface. The actinic purpura increases when it starts as a small patch on your arm, neck, or back (usually, this will be seen on the skin surface exposed to the sun for a more extended period).

HOW DOES IT SHOW UP ON THE SKIN?

Actinic Purpura is a skin condition that is more common amongst those in their later phase of beauty. This is because it affects a more mature skin type. For example, someone who struggles with dry skin or sun-damaged skin would be more likely to have these actinic purpura lesions come through in the dermal tissues.

The common condition looks like bruising or webbed, dark splotches across the skin, and is often a result of chronic sun exposure. The lesions are red to purple with well-defined borders. They may be painful at times but usually not itchy. These can also be associated with fever, fatigue, weight loss, joint pain, abdominal discomfort, etc.

Depending on your skin tone, the solar purpura could appear as purple blotches or brown pigmentation. These areas are not raised but flat and smooth to touch. The proper term for this appearance is “purpuric lesions.” Just like the coloring of a bruise, the actinic purpuric lesions have shades of purple and red.

THE CAUSES OF ACTINCA PURPURA

The incidence increases with age and is more common in the elderly population but can occur in younger people. It affects both men and women equally. There are no ethnic or racial predispositions to this disorder.

Patients usually describe their symptoms as ‘small bruises’ that appear over days or weeks following a trivial injury such as falling, bumping into furniture, or getting up from sitting. The bruising may be accompanied by pain, dry skin, tenderness, or swelling.

There is no specific cause for senile purpura. However, there appears to be an increased incidence associated with advancing age, particularly in people older than 70 years. This has been attributed to the reduced elasticity of dermal collagen fibers leading to greater susceptibility to injury from minor mechanical forces such as rubbing or scratching.

In addition, exposure to sunlight increases the likelihood of developing this condition. There is evidence that ultraviolet radiation can induce oxidative stress within cells resulting in DNA damage and cell death.

TREATMENT OPTIONS FOR ACTINCA PURPURA

In most mild cases, no specific treatment is required for senile purpura. Treatment depends upon the severity of the lesion and the epidermal thickness. If you’re unsure, you may need to go for a physical examination, and during this period, the healthcare provider will ask about your medical history. This could be concerning the different skin cancers. An adverse family history around this could impact the diagnosis.

If unexplained bruising or excessive bruising persists, it’s essential to speak to your health care provider.

Milder forms do not require any therapy. In more severe cases, topical steroids, oral medication such as antihistamines, topical vitamins, analgesics, and antibiotics can be used.

WHAT OTHERS HAVE SAID

“As a 74-year-old male with a significant history of sun exposure, my forearms began showing signs of actinic purpura a couple of years ago. It seems that the slightest trauma was causing ugly purple welts on my skin. Every time I would bump my arm on something, I knew what would follow. I have been through two bottles, and I seem to be less sensitive now. As long as I see improvement, I will continue to use the product. I think, as in most cases, a positive reaction may depend on skin type (my opinion). There are several medical articles available detailing how EGF treats senile purpura.”

– David Bley

“I’m back for a second bottle. A previous review stating improved actinic purpura convinced me to try. Purpura was ruining my life; just my grandchildren holding my hand resulted in black bruises lasting weeks. This has vastly improved the skin on my hands. Thanks to the prior reviewer.

– Susan

I’m pretty impressed with this serum. I just turned 40, and although I have good skin (not many acne scars, wrinkles, etc.) I did have a lot of sunspots and sun damage to my skin. However, within a week, I noticed a difference; the spots remained, but they seemed lighter, and my skin looked so fresh. I liked this product so much that last week I ordered my second bottle. I want to say the first bottle lasted over two months, so the price is no biggie. If you try this serum, I hope you, too, get great results.
